Penalties for Colorado Theft Crimes

By Timothy Bussey on January 22, 2016

Penalties for a theft depend on the value of what you’ve been accused of stealing. The worth of the object in question will lead to a petty, misdemeanor, or felony theft offense. A theft crime happens anytime someone illegally obtains (by taking, taking by a threat, or taking by deception) anything of value from the item’s owner. This means a theft charge can arise from purse snatching, returning fraudulent items to a store, or conning someone out of their money.

Marijuana Crimes in Colorado

By Timothy Bussey on September 10, 2015

Colorado Marijuana LawsColorado Amendment 64 made headlines around the world in 2012. The popular ballot initiative made it legal for people aged 21 and over to possess certain amounts of industrial hemp or cannabis (marijuana). Essentially, Amendment 64 legalized the personal recreational use of marijuana much in the same way as alcohol may be used. In addition, the new law allows for the “commercial cultivation, manufacture, and sale” of cannabis. In spite of marijuana’s new legality in Colorado, possession of it may still lead to arrest. It’s important that the finer points of the law be understood by anyone considering using, growing, or purchasing the substance.

Colorado State Patrol Issued 298 DUI Arrests Over Memorial Day Weekend

By Timothy Bussey on June 8, 2015

Memorial Day weekend 2015 saw approximately two million more drivers on the roads nationwide than in the previous year, according to an estimate by the American Automobile Association (AAA).  Memorial Day also marked the start of “Checkpoint Colorado,” a program that increases the number of checkpoints and police officers on the road throughout the summer, scanning for signs that drivers might be driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs (DUI).

The increased patrols during Memorial Day also resulted in 298 arrests on suspicion of drunk driving.  Although this number represents a significant decrease from the 408 DUI arrests made over Memorial Day weekend 2014, the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and over 80 local law enforcement agencies throughout Colorado have promised to keep up their increased patrolling through the next hundred days.
