Colorado Springs Man Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

By Timothy Bussey on August 5, 2013

Colorado Springs Sex Crime DefenseA 37-year-old Colorado Springs man was arrested in Florida on suspicion of creating child pornography with a 5-year-old girl. According to a Fox 31 news report, the man was arrested near Tampa. Officials executed a search warrant of his Colorado Springs mobile home back on June 11. They removed several computers and other digital media items during their search. In July, they examined the items and allegedly uncovered sexually explicit images of a 5-year-old girl. Once they decided that the Colorado Springs mobile home was the site of the crime, they arrested him and charged him with sexual exploitation of children. He is being held in Florida and is awaiting extradition to Colorado.

As is clear in this case, law enforcement officials go to great lengths to arrest individuals suspected of creating, possessing, and distributing child pornography. Colorado Springs police officers and investigators often work with law enforcement officers in other jurisdictions to track down individuals responsible for the exploitation of children.

Under Colorado Code 18-6-403, sexually exploitative material is defined as any “photograph, motion picture, video, video tape, print, negative, slide, or other mechanically, electronically, chemically, or digitally reproduced visual material that depicts a child engaged in, participating in, observing, or being used for explicit sexual conduct.”

Cases involving the sexual exploitation of a child in Colorado can result in a number of life-changing penalties. A conviction can result in jail time, fines, and mandatory registration as a sex offender. Being a registered offender can affect where you are allowed to work, where you can live, and even when you are allowed to interact with your own children. Many registered offenders find it challenging to return to normalcy after serving time. The restrictions on their civil liberties and the stigma of being labeled a sex offender can make it difficult to reintegrate into the community.
