Analyzing the FBI’s most recent crime statistics for Colorado, a group of researchers at FindTheBest.com ranked Colorado’s counties according to violent crime rates. And although the site’s “Ten Worst Counties” list has been making the rounds on the Internet, a second look at the numbers reveals that even in these so-called “worst” counties, the number of violent crimes tracked is lower than it is in many other U.S. locales.
Counties on the “ten worst” list includes:
- Saguache County. Ranking at number nine on the list, Saguache County recorded 322.6 violent crimes per 100,000 people – but with a low overall population, these numbers included no murders, only two robberies, and 15 assaults.
- Lake County. Lake County had 341.0 reported violent crimes per 100,000 people, according to the FBI data. But, like Saguache County, the actual number of crimes was low: zero murders or robberies, two reported rapes, and 23 reported assaults.
- Clear Creek County. Clear Creek County also saw no murders or robberies reported in 2015, five rapes, and 32 assaults. Yet, with 408.9 crimes per 100,000 residents, it stands at number five on the “ten worst” list.
- Pueblo County. Topping the list is Pueblo County, with 662.9 reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents – the highest in the state. In 2013, these included five murders, 171 rapes, 219 robberies, and 666 cases of assault.
