Winter is coming, and in Colorado, this means snow and ice, both of which can easily cause slip and fall accidents that result in serious injuries.
According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), about half of all slip and fall injuries are to the lower extremities – the legs, ankles, and feet. One way to help prevent these accidents is to use an out-of-the-way place to put snow-covered footwear, or to use absorbent boot mats that allow people to knock or scrape the snow off their shoes as they enter the building. The NIOSH also recommends having a place for wet umbrellas in rainy weather, so that puddles caused by dripping rainwater do not pose a hazard.
Slip and fall injuries can cause serious harm. Fractures, sprains, and bruises can all take an extended period of time to heal and require medical attention, while severe head or spinal cord injuries may cause permanent damage.
