If your Colorado driver’s license has been suspended or revoked as a result of a driving under the influence (DUI) conviction or for another reason, the Motor Vehicle Division may require you to obtain an SR-22 insurance form in order to have your driving privileges restored to you.
The SR-22 is available from your auto insurance company. It is a rider that attaches to your insurance policy. It ensures that your insurance company will keep your car insurance in effect for a certain period of time.
If you fail to keep your insurance policy current, your insurance company will contact the Division of Motor Vehicles to tell them that your SR-22 is no longer good. If this happens, your driver’s license may be suspended. Therefore, it is very important to pay your auto insurance premiums on time and to ensure you stay insured during the entire time the SR-22 is in effect. If you decide to change car insurance companies, you will need to file a new SR-22 from the new insurance company before the SR-22 from your previous auto insurer expires.
You can deliver your SR-22 form in person to the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles at 1881 Pierce Street in Lakewood, Colorado. Your local branch may also be able to give advice on how to file your SR-22 locally.
