The 2014 “Crime in Colorado” report released last week by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation reported a decrease of 2.5 percent in the crime rate per 100,000 Colorado residents between 2013 and 2014.
Although the percentages of certain crimes increased, as a whole, the violent crime rate dropped in Colorado in 2014. Categories in which rates increased included:
- Rape: 2 percent
- Aggravated assault: 3.9 percent
- Other assaults: 6.9 percent
- Motor vehicle theft: 1 percent
Among crimes that decreased in 2014, homicide saw the biggest drop, decreasing fully 12.8 percent from 2013 to 2014. Burglaries dropped 6.6 percent, and robberies dropped 3.7 percent. Larceny decreased by 2.8 percent as well.
Overall, the CBI report note that violent crimes decreased by 1.9 percent, and property crimes decreased by 3.1 percent.
The report also calculated the number of arrests made in Colorado in 2014 for a wide range of suspected crimes – not just homicide, rape, robbery and other violent offenses, but also for items like weapon violations, gambling, disorderly conduct, and vagrancy. In total, the CBI estimates that 193,545 adults were arrested on suspicion of various crimes in 2014, and 28,694 juveniles were arrested. The CBI did not provide numbers stating how many of these arrests resulted in formal criminal charges, trials, or convictions in 2014.
